Year 3 Simon Community Visit

23rd Nov 2015

On Friday 13th November a leader from the Simon Community came to visit us and teach us about Homelessness around Belfast. We went to Mrs McIlroy’s class to listen.

First we talked about how important it is to have a home and what a home feels like.

Next we created a picture of what we thought a person who is homeless looks like. We realised that not all homeless people are scruffy and have beards!

Then we learned that there are two types of homeless people. ‘Visual Homeless’ are people that we can see sleeping and living on the street or a park. ‘Hidden Homeless’ are people that we cannot see because they are living in someone else’s house, maybe sleeping on the sofa.

After that we asked questions about Homelessness in Belfast. We learned lots about where people can go if they need help.

Finally we talked about ways that we could help people who are homeless. We decided that we would create a Christmas gift box to give to the homeless.

We felt a bit sad learning about Homelessness because we would really miss our home if we didn’t have one. We are very thankful that we can go home to our cosy beds all through the winter months.
