In World Around Us, Year 5 Mc Closkey have been having great fun investigating sound. Yesterday they were out in the yard experimenting with homemade megaphones. They worked in groups. One child had the megaphone and the others stood at various distance from the person with the megaphone and recorded their observations. Lucia said that the megaphone made the sound louder and helped it travel further.
Today they constructed String telephones as part of their investigation into sound. Edward said, "We found out that you could hear the sound if you were not using the string telephone but that it was a lot louder if you used the string telephone."
Lucia and Edward have learnt that sounds travels in waves. They also learnt that the big bigger the sound wave the deeper the sound is and the further it travels. They both found out that sound travelled better when the string on the string telephone was taut and not loose.
They had loads of fun experimenting with sound vibrations. They love experimenting !
