P1 Wynne Concept of a Word

4th Oct 2017

In Primary 1 we are learning that a sentence is made up of smaller units called words. The words are made up of letters from our alphabet.

When we visited the Nursery Playground this week, we took turns to say the sentence, ‘My name is ……’.

Miss Wynne went first, she said, ‘My name is Miss Wynne.’ There were 5 words in Miss Wynne’s sentence.

Miss Wynne then put out 5 hula hoops. As she said each word, she stepped into a new hula hoop. We all got a turn at saying the same sentence, for example, ‘My name is Olivia.’ The rest of our class had 4 words in their sentence so we only needed 4 hula hoops!

At home, why don’t you say a sentence to your adult and see if they can count the words in your sentence? You could take turns saying a sentence and counting the words. Maybe you could hop for each word!
