Big Win for Girls' Gaelic team

Big Win for Girls' Gaelic team

It was a rainy afternoon at Grosvenor pitch and St. Bride’s were to play Holy Trinity in the ‘Truly Fare’ A Division League Final. Aileen McD opened the scoring for St. Bride’s with a point from distance. This was followed up by great defensive play from Niamh T getting the ball to an active Tess McA. Tess found Cara B who comfortably put it over the bar. We were two points up and 10mins into the half. The first half ended 0-02 to 0-00 to St. Bride’s.

In the second half, substitutes Eimear M and Niamh O’H came on. Holy Trinity scored 2 points unanswered but an interception from Aileen McD made it to Laura A. She pointed for St. Bride’s third score of the game. Caomihe McD (Team Captain) made an important tackle and got the ball to Eimear M. Cara B had got herself into space and with an accurate pass from Eimear, slotted the ball confidently into the back of the net. With an advantage of 3 points, St. Bride’s became more confident and they really started to enjoy the game. St. Bride’s followed up with another goal after Cara B put pressure on Holy Trinity’s goalie. Aileen McD took her opportunity and scored a great goal. Holy Trinity were to respond with a point but at this stage St. Bride’s had found their feet and had started looking for the win.

Overall, it was a terrific win for the girls after several tough league games. The final score was 2-03 to 0-03 to St. Bride’s. The girls played extremely well and had worked hard in defence, midfield and in the forward line. Well done to all involved.

The team: Cara C, Niamh T, Orla McK, Caoimhe McD (c ), Caitlin C, Laura A, Aileen McD, Norah G, Orla L, Tess McA, Cara B, Eimear M, Niamh O’H.

The League Final- The Truly Fare Cup Today the Year 6 and 7 girls won the league. It was a thrilling event for us all and I was privileged to be on the team. I was in goals and thankfully no goals were let in. Frank Mc Gurk was behind the nets and he helped me, telling me to concentrate and kick the ball out to the wings. I was very glad of his help. It was comforting having someone to tell me what to do as the coaches were on up the field. Cara B was the top goal scorer. Mid fielders Aileen and Laura also scored points. The rain provided a cool relief from the intensity of the match. We the girls want to thank our coaches, Mrs McMahon and Miss O’Leary, for giving up their time to coach us and lead us to victory. Thanks also to Frank and the parents who came to support us and to our great caretaker Victor who drove the bus to and from the match. Go St. Bride's!
