Year 7 Kennedy Investigate Gyrocopters

16th Apr 2015

As part of our Flight topic we carried out an investigation with gyrocopters. We wanted to see if the size of a gyrocpter’s wing would affect the speed it falls at.

We had to consider the role of air resistance and drag and whether or not the size of the wings affect drag.

We had 3 sizes of gyrocopters and we added a weight to each one in the form of a paper clip.

We each took it in turns to drop our gyrocopters from an agreed height. We recorded the results and then compared them with the rest of the class.

We discovered that the larger gyrocopter took longer to fall. We can conclude therefore, the larger the surface area the greater the drag.

It was a great experiment and one we thoroughly enjoyed doing!
